Rafael Delacruz: Xerox
April 21 – June 8, 2024
Opens Sunday, April 21, 4–6pm
Stutter, 2024
Oil and colored pencil on canvas
29.5 x 33.5 inches
Rafael Delacruz, “Xerox,” features four new paintings within an idiosyncratic installation, and an assortment of photographs by Seiichi Furuya, a Japanese artist based in Graz, Austria.
Delacruz’ new works are paintings within paintings; the interiors are rendered separately from their larger painted “frames” and carefully nested within. The installation infrastructure and inclusion of Furuya photographs speaks to the artist’s flexible and open-ended understanding of authorship, visibility, containment, and procedure.
Rafael Delacruz (b. 1989, San Francisco) lives and works in Berkeley, CA. His most recent exhibition “Healing Finger Clean Drawings” was on view at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York in 2023. In 2018, Cushion Works presented his video “D.W.S.” (2017) alongside artwork by Miyoko Ito and Lucas Samaras.
